DNV Summer project 2011: DRILLING IN ARCTIC

Hydrocarbons – oil, gas and coal – will continue to be the main sources of energy for the next decades, but other sources, many of them renewable, will grow faster. The era of easy oil is over, driving oil companies to search for less accessible reserves. A large part of the world’s undiscovered hydrocarbons are in Arctic areas. The safety level for field development under these harsh conditions should be the same as in developed areas – thus the need for new standards, development of new technology, and solutions to the environmental challenges The impact of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill in the summer of 2010 will undoubtedly change how future deep water and Arctic exploration will be regulated and executed. Scope The students should present a business case considering the major technical, social, political, environmental and economical risks for drilling in an Arctic area. Overall the risk level should be comparable to more developed areas e.g. the North Sea. This means that the risk associated specifically for Arctic areas should be assessed. Results The final delivery should outline grounds for decision basis that could be utilised for an investment decision. Areas that need technology qualification should be identified and the uncertainty to be estimated. The risk based approach shall include the spectrum of unwanted consequences both for the primary stakeholder in the activity and for the society. The main deliverables should include what is needed in order to have a sustainable development in the arctic. We expect a delivery that can be highly visible and applied at various events, e.g. some sort of exhibition material in combination with presentations material. The students will have a great deal of freedom to define the detailed content of the project. DNV uses a web based recruitment portal. Please register your CV and attachments electronically.
