PhD Candidate at the Department of Industrial Economics and Technology Management (ICT)

There is a temporary position available at the Department of Industrial Economics and Technology Management as a PhD Candidate for a period of four years with one year assigned for teaching and research-administrative duties. This is an educational position, intended to provide promising researchers the opportunity for professional development through studies toward a PhD degree.


The position is connected to the PhD program at the Faculty of Economics and Management, with a concentration in Industrial Economics and Technology Management.


The Ph.D. Candidate will be part of one of four research groups:

  • Managerial Economics, Finance and Operations Research (BEDØK)
  • Safety, Health and Environment (HMS)
  • Operations Management (VIL)
  • Strategy and Business Development (Stratforr)


About the position:

The department is seeking a candidate to conduct research within one of our four strategic research initiatives:

• Health and the public sector
• Future organizations and working life
• Digital transformation
• Green value creation/circular economy


With this PhD Candidate position, the candidate’s research should focus on the topic ICT within one of the four strategic research initiatives. The candidate is given the opportunity to develop his or her own project, or the candidate may link his/her project to an ongoing research project at the department within one of the four strategic research initiatives. The project should be developed in cooperation with a potential supervisor or supervisory team from one of the four research groups, and a project proposal must be enclosed with the application.


The PhD Candidate should have completed, or should be nearing completion of, one of the department’s Master’s degree programs, or have completed Master’s level education with a comparable profile at another institution (See Qualifications and Skills). Candidates from the department’s own program Industrial Economics and Technology Management (MTIØT) will be preferred.


A PhD degree from this department prepares the candidate for a career in research and teaching at leading national and international educational institutions, as well as careers within industry, the private sector, and the public sector that require strong competency and analytical skills.


The department endeavours to promote research that meets high international standards. Subsequently, contact with international institutions is important. Therefore, the department encourages the successful PhD Candidate to spend one to two semesters of the contract period at a foreign educational institution. The department offers support in the planning of such scholarly visits.


The department’s mission is to conduct teaching and research, that meets high international standards, at the intersection between technology/natural sciences and business management/EHS to promote sustainable value creation within technological fields in industry, the private sector and the public sector in Norway. The department recruits new scientific staff that reflect this mission, and seeks passionate individuals who will not only contribute toward our vision “More research and cooperation that increases our value creation in the crossroads between technology/natural sciences and business management/EHS,” but also show potential for continuous out-of-the-box thinking in this area.


Qualifications and Skills

  • A Master’s degree from one of the department’s programs, or a comparable degree from another institution that demonstrates research experience within the intersection between technology/natural sciences and business management/EHS, is required by the employment start date. Applicants must have a weighted average grade for the last two years of their master's degree (equivalent to 120 ECTS credits) of B or higher in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. Recent graduates, or applicants who are in the final stage of their Master’s program, are encouraged to apply. Such an applicant may be offered the position under the condition that the master thesis will show satisfactory final term results. Applicants who have completed an experience-based Master’s program will not be considered.
  • Qualified applicants must be proficient in English, both oral and written.

The department’s research committee will rank the applicants on the basis of the grades from the qualifying program, qualifications, competencies, motivation for the position, potential, and the overall quality of the project.


The candidate’s personal suitability for inclusion in the research team will be an important factor. Likewise, personal characteristics such as ability to work independently, capacity for work, enthusiasm, and ability to contribute toward a positive work environment in general, and the PhD candidate community more specifically, will be assigned importance as well. Additionally, in ranking the applicants, the overall project will be considered in terms of how well it fits with the department’s strategic research intitiatives and areas of focus.
